'Hip-Hop Literacy' at Mandela School

Hip-Hop Activist Raoul Juneja (a.k.a. Deejay Ra) will be holding a "Peace in the Streets" ceremony for students at the Nelson Mandela Park school in downtown Toronto (Canada) the morning of December 13th, marking the one year passing anniversary of Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Stanley 'Tookie' Williams.

Taking place under the banner of Juneja's acclaimed 'Hip-Hop Literacy' program, the ceremony will be focusing on books and music meant to steer Canadian youth away from gang violence, which has significantly risen in Toronto over the past few years. A live musical component to the ceremony will feature hip-hop artist Imaan Faith, who will be performing educationally uplifting songs as interludes to Juneja's lessons, spanning from Tookie to rap icon Tupac Amaru Shakur to world leader Nelson Mandela.

No strangers to Mandela themed initiatives, Juneja, of South Asian heritage, and Faith, of Iranian heritage, released an 'Aids Awareness' rap CD for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund Canada (NMCF) this past February as part of a HipHop4Africa Toronto fundraising benefit, which was hosted by Canadian media icon George Stroumboulopoulos. In 2003 the city of Toronto also played backdrop to filming of the Redemption TV movie featuring Jamie Foxx as Tookie, which starred Canadian hip-hop founder Wes 'Maestro' Williams as Tookie's peacemaker lieutenant Tony Bogard.

The "Peace in the Streets" ceremony also marks the five year anniversary of Toronto Park school being re-named Nelson Mandela Park, during a personal visit of Mandela's to the school in late 2001. A music video montage paying tribute to Tookie, Tupac and Mandela will conclude the ceremony, reflecting largely unknown connections between the personalities and the need for observation of their positive messages amongst multi-cultural youth.

Juneja's 'Hip-Hop Literacy' music and movie themed educational campaign was launched in February 2004 with the support of Get Shorty author Elmore Leonard. The campaign has since recorded PSA's with dozens of actors ranging from The Hurricane actor Vicellous Shannon to Mississippi Masala actress Sarita Choudhury, and has received the support of numerous authors such as comic creator Stan Lee and Mandela comrade Mac Maharaj among others.
